It has been about two years since we first adopted Yakoo. Over those months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with him to help him learn the basics of a new version of what we call our PAWtactile language. Humans who are deaf or blind rely on a variation of ASL or American Sign Language. While this method is great, it is very visually intensive. Both the deafblind participant and/or their interpreter have to rely on visual clues or cues to understand a conversation.
About 15 years ago, two deafblind activists began creating what has now become known as a more touching intensive upgrade of ASL. They called their new, more enhanced method of communication a PROtactile language.
Once we began working with DOGtorYakoo, it became evident that he too needed more than simple touch-and-tap methods of communicating. Thus we started using the human PROtactile model but adapting it to work better with DOGtorYakoo … a new version of interactive connectivity that we call our PAWtactile language.
Our desire is to periodically share posts about PAWtactilism and how Yakoo’s doing making the system work for him. We hope you find these updates useful. Feel free to comment on our posts if you have information or ideas to share.
